Andy's napping, wrapped in white cotton sheets and pillows. An afternoon nap before we head out to watch the Auckland anniversary fireworks and hopefully, a few ciders down by the water. We spent the morning at the markets where I picked up a strange painting for $5 which I'll photograph soon, bought a watermelon and plums and headed off to the beach, Murawai this time to see the ganet colony. Ganets are romantics. They perform the most graceful dance to attract their mate then once mated they stay together forever, travelling each year to Australia then returning to Murawai and their same nest to breed again.
Nesting. We stopped and looked at this sweet relocation home in Kumeu. I loved it. We are thinking Birkenhead might be affordable, went for a drive and there are some beautiful lush sections. Just have to avoid the suburbia blocks. Weird, never thought I'd think of moving away from the city but starting to feel excited about the prospect of our own place...anywhere... with trees and grass and decking. Andy is determined to plant fruit trees as soon as we get a place. Mmmm. Feijoas.
Btw, I know we look like twats with the same fake RayBans but it's ok because fortunately, we are twats.
I made Vietnamese summer rolls last night and ravaged our mint plants...they no longer look like this, more sad and naked. So worth it.

Beautiful breakfast at Kate & Andrews, big 3 hour long walk along the beach and marina, cider at the Devonport cricket club in the sunny grass. Perfect last day of holiday.

We went off for a walk in the Waitakare's today, at Little Huia Dam. We realised 30 minutes into the bush that we had made all the classic amatuer trekking mistakes - no map, no warm clothes, no water, no food, no good trekking shoes or clothes (I was wearing a sun-dress and sandshoes). We didn't even know how long the trail was.

The above pics are all Ilha Grande, beautiful beaches, average little township, good little beach bars/restaurants, a little pricey. If you are deciding between Parati/Trinadaje and Ilha Grande (or something else), drop Ilha Grande...its beautiful but not a lot to do and we loved Parati etc better. It could be a mission to get to as well??
All the above are Parati. I do think you'll love it. Splurge and hire a boat for a day, alone or hook up with fellow travellers. Really beautiful.
Trinadaje: very basic but dozens of beach bars and THE most beautiful beaches. Lazy week could be spent here. Lots of walking to waterfalls/swimming holes but plenty of beaches close by. The most spectacular beach is a 10 minute walk. The local beach is also stunning.
Then Rio. If you do go to Rio, we can give the name and number for Maria's Rooms in Cocacobana - lovely, airy room in her house - she's lovely and the house is in a very safe part of Rio. xxx
